Tire safety and maintenance are key factors of travel safety

On Behalf of | Sep 19, 2019 | Personal Injury |

If someone were to ask you how much air pressure each of the tires in your car needs to function at maximum safety quality, would you be able to correctly answer the question? Don’t worry if you read that question and your first thought was that you would have absolutely no idea. In fact, you can logically assume that many other Georgia vehicle owners might give similar answers.

Unless you have a background in tire manufacturing or other aspects of vehicle safety, it is not uncommon to be only vaguely familiar (or not all) with air pressure gauges and other tire safety issues. It’s a good idea to learn more about it, however, because tire safety and maintenance are critical issues when it comes to avoiding a blow-out or possibly a collision. Then again, even if you’re on top of your tire safety game, another driver’s negligence can place you at risk for injury.

What’s so important about air pressure?

According to the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration, being ‘tire smart’ is essential to travel safety. Do you know that if you do not keep your tires properly inflated, it will likely cost you more per gallon in fuel? Inside your driver’s side door, there is a posted label that tells you the exact recommendations for how much air to put in your tires.

In some vehicles, manufacturers recommend that your front and rear tires have different amounts of pressure, which is another reason it’s important to know this information.

Other tire issues that help keep you safe

Properly inflated tires are only one of many safety factors that can not only help you arrive safely to your travel destination but can help you save money as well. Making sure you regularly rotate your tires and checking alignment are also important steps to take to keep your car running smoothly and safely.

It’s dangerous to ride around with balding tires. This is why you’ll want to periodically check your tires’ treads. You may not know a lot about car maintenance or tire issues, so it’s always a good idea to know where to seek support if a tire problem arises.

Driver negligence often results in serious injuries

There’s no way to know if the drivers with whom you’re sharing a particular Georgia roadway have done everything they can to make sure their tires are operating at maximum safety capacity. In fact, in addition to tire issues, there is no way to know whether a driver is paying attention to the road or plans to adhere to all traffic laws. A moment of carelessness at the wheel or negligence in maintaining a vehicle is all it takes to cause collision.

If another driver’s negligence causes you injury, you might take days, weeks or even months to recover. Some collisions are so severe that accident victims are left with life-long scars or impediments because of their injuries. Far too many fatalities are the result of driver negligence in this and other states. Recovering accident victims and families of fatally injured travelers often seek compensation for damages by filing injury or wrongful death claims against those deemed responsible.
