How to drive safely in heavy rain

With the spring season here, you should expect to encounter rain on a regular basis. You may enjoy the rain when you're sitting inside your house, but it's a different story entirely if you're out on the road.

Wet roads impact your vehicle in many ways, like making it more difficult to stop. Rather than face a safety risk, follow these three tips if you find yourself driving in the rain:

  • Slow down: Slowing down helps you avoid hydroplaning, which occurs when your tires lose contact with the road. Also, the slower you're driving the quicker you can stop.
  • Use your headlights: This increases visibility, while also making it easier for other drivers to see your vehicle. Don't use your high beams, as this can blind other drivers and may reflect back into your eyes.
  • Leave more space: It doesn't matter if you're driving on the highway or in stop-and-go city traffic, leaving additional space between vehicles gives you more time to react in an emergency.

If you're not comfortable driving in heavy rain, don't hesitate to move your vehicle to a safe place, such as a parking lot. You can stay where you are until the rain slows.

While most drivers take extra caution when rain begins to fall, some continue to drive as if conditions are perfect. This increases the likelihood of a crash.

If you're injured in a car accident due to another driver's negligence, receive treatment and then file an insurance claim. You can learn more about your legal rights and the best way to obtain compensation.
