If your car could talk: new tech tools could help after crash

In the aftermath of a car accident, there are several details to uncover and confirm. For example, you will need to figure out what happened in the seconds before the crash, who is to blame and what factors specifically contributed to a collision.

However, it is unlikely that you or others involved will have all this information available. Even if someone can recall details, they may not be as accurate or specific as we would hope. And in some cases, people will lie or leave out information in an effort to shield themselves from liability. However, new technology could be the answer to this very problem.

According to reports, in-car technology has come quite far in recent years and is continuing to grow and change. Already, there is a very good chance your vehicle has a data recorder installed. These devices, which are like the black boxes we hear about in planes, keep track of certain pieces of data that can help uncover the details of a car's performance in the minutes and seconds prior to a crash.

However, automaker Tesla is taking that technology another step further. Tesla cars have devices installed that are constantly sending incredibly detailed reports back to the manufacturer via the internet. These communications make it easier and faster to get answers in the aftermath of a car accident.

The technology available in Teslas is not yet widely used in other cars, though it is expected to be installed in as many as 90 percent of motor vehicles made in the next five years.

There are critics of this technology and limitations that will likely present some challenges in the coming years; but it is certainly interesting to think that a device could eventually provide immediate answers to questions victims often wrestle with long after an accident.

In the meantime, however, one of your best options for getting answers after a crash is to speak with an attorney. Not only can he or she help you determine cause and liability, your lawyer can also help you fight for the compensation you need and deserve.
