Concealing medical conditions can be deadly

Operating any motor vehicle takes skill, training and focus, whether you are driving a smaller motorcycle or an enormous commercial truck. If someone is not physically or mentally capable of driving safely and lawfully, that person shouldn’t be driving and is likely going to be unable to secure a driver’s license.

Unfortunately, not every driver takes seriously the responsibility of driving safely and securing proper licensing. In fact, there are some who will lie or try to cover up conditions that compromise their ability to operate heavy machinery just so they can drive.

For instance, recently it was reported that a fatal crash in another state was caused by a truck driver who should never have been on the road. Not only did he have a troubling history of accidents, violations and failure to comply with trucking regulations, but he also concealed a medical condition that disqualified him from driving a commercial truck legally.

The driver reportedly is diabetic who uses insulin. This means that he would have needed to secure an exemption in order to be allowed to legally operate a commercial vehicle. He evidently did not do this and, in fact, he concealed his condition when he sought medical clearance.

In this case, and far too many others like it, innocent victims ultimately paid the price for the driver’s reckless decision to cover up a dangerous medical condition.

If you or a loved one has been injured in a commercial crash, it can be critical to consult an attorney who can assess the situation and investigate possible violations on the part of the trucker. Should there be a violation discovered, you can be eligible to receive compensation for damages. Further, the negligent driver can be held accountable for his or her irresponsible decision to sidestep state and federal trucking regulations.
