Remember: You have rights after a drunk driving crash

Over the holiday weekend, law enforcement agents increased efforts to stop drunk and distracted drivers across Georgia. Their goal was to prevent catastrophic accidents from happening. These increased efforts are common during holiday weekends like Memorial Day, as they are times known to result in higher numbers of drivers on the road and more drinking.

Sadly, hundreds of people were killed in Georgia in boating or driving accidents during the Memorial Day weekend last year. While we don't yet have statistics for this year just yet, it doesn't exactly matter if you or your loved one was among those injured or killed in a drunk driving accident. You don't need statistics; you need help.

Drunk driving accidents can be some of the most upsetting types of collisions, as they are completely preventable. There are always ways to avoid drunk driving, from taking a cab or finding a designated driver to refraining from drinking and making plans to stay someone until it is safe to drive.

But sadly, too many people fail to take any of these precautions and just cross their fingers before getting behind the wheel of a car or a boat. Maybe they get home; maybe they get pulled over by a police officer. Maybe they wind up causing a devastating crash that forever changes another person's life. The fact is, each of these is a possibility and victims are the ones who have no control over the outcome.

In the event of a crash with a drunk driver, victims and their families have the right to take back control by holding an intoxicated motorist responsible. Filing a lawsuit can assign legal and financial accountability for the damages caused by negligent or reckless behaviors.

Historically, increased enforcement during holiday weekends is a successful way to raise awareness and prevent accidents from happening. However, if you or a loved one was still involved in a crash with a driver who should not have been behind the wheel, you have legal options to help you regain control and seek the closure and compensation you deserve.
