18-year-old taken into custody after man's death

An 18-year-old woman has been taken into custody after a man was killed in a car accident in Georgia on Sept. 17. Authorities reported that they responded to an anonymous tip that led to the teen's arrest in the wrongful death. The victim had just been released from Douglasville jail and walked outside when he was hit. She was held without bond.

On Sept. 23, the woman, who fled the scene after the accident, told a judge through her continual tears via teleconference that she tried to miss hitting the man. She admitted that she should have stopped after hitting him, but she says she was preoccupied because of family issues, including her mother's cancer. She confessed to the crime and said she had just left her mom's residence when the man stepped in front of her vehicle. She didn't know what to do and drove away without reporting the accident.

The tip led authorities to the car in Alabama where it had been taken apart and sanded. Authorities further explained that her brothers were involved in the attempted cover-up of the crime and could face charges as well. However, the woman contended that she transported the vehicle to her family's shop for repairs, not to repair it.

After someone loses their life in car accident, family members could want to hold the responsible parties accountable for their action. A personal injury attorney might be able to help the family file a wrongful death claims, especially if the driver was negligent. They can try to seek compensation in the form of expenses and pain and suffering.
